Functional Skills English

This qualification will help you to improve your ability to read and write more effectively.     The course is suitable for those who wish to apply their English skills in a range of  situations, including writing formal emails, letters, verbal discussions and dealing with correspondence.

It will also help your communication skills, developing your speaking and listening.

 

WHAT THIS COURSE COVERS:

  • Grammar and sentence structure – the building blocks of the English language
  • Punctuation
  • The purpose of writing a text and how to identify and use their features
  • Features of the layout – focus on the formatting of documents in the right way for specific situations

 

WHAT LEVEL WILL I BE DOING?

We will carry out an initial assessment as part of your enrolment which will determine your level and also take into account any prior learning or qualifications you have.

 

WILL I DO AN EXAM?

Yes - the exam is in three parts:  Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.      When you achieve, you will receive an accredited qualification from NCFE.

 

Functional Skills Maths

This qualification will help you to improve your everyday life and work numeracy skills.

 

WHAT THIS COURSE COVERS:

  • How to carry out calculations with numbers of any size in practical contexts, to a given number of decimal places
  • Understand, use and calculate ratio and proportion, including problems involving scale
  • Understand and use equivalences between fractions, decimals and percentages
  • Understand and use simple formulae and equations involving one- or two-step operations
  • Recognise and use 2D representations of 3D objects
  • Find area, perimeter and volume of common shapes
  • Use, convert and calculate using metric and, where appropriate, imperial measures
  • Problem-solving using money

Yes - the exam is in two parts:  Calculator and non calculator paper.      When you achieve, you will receive an accredited qualification from NCFE.

 

WHEN ARE THE CLASSES?

We have classes in different areas, so it depends when you contact us which group you can join.   Currently we are running classes in Hayes and Harlington Community Centre, Albert Rd, Hayes UB3 4HR - these classes are running Monday - Thursday 10am to 3.30 pm and Friday 10am to 1pm.  Courses normally are 3-4 weeks.    Please contact us and we can let you know when the next course will be starting.

 

HOW DO I SIGN UP?

* To be eligible for this fully funded course you will need to meet the following criteria:

  • On the 31st of August 2021 you were aged 19 or over
  • You have the right to live and work in the UK
  • Can provide proof of ID, proof of address and NI number

 

Do I have to pay for the course?

No - the course is fully funded by GLA and Corporation of London.
